Greater Chennai Corporation or GCC made many heads turn when it revised the property tax amount in Chennai. Now, as many as 3552 Chennai residents have sent objections to the revision in the property tax by GCC in the 15 zones belonging to Chennai.

On 22nd July 2022, GCC would share details about property taxes calculation sheets online for the sake of the residents. This would be mainly to reduce the number of assesses who send generic objections without even knowing about the property tax calculations process.

Disposal of the petitions received from assesses was instructed to the regional deputy commissioners by Mr. Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Chennai Corporation Commissioner. Those objections made on helpline 1913 would be taken into consideration.

It was pointed out by Mr Vishnu Mahajan, deputy commissioner of Chennai Corporation (Revenue and Finance) that many petitions were generic in nature. It is worthy to note that the property tax revision was based on the GO and a council resolution and GCC does not have any power to reduce the amount. He hinted that any genuine objection related to the assessment would be addressed and proper replies would be sent for all objections. It is noteworthy that the revision amount calculation of property taxes were done according to the rules and an online facility would help the residents of Chennai to know about the calculation of their property taxes. For creating a better Chennai, it was the duty of the residents to pay their property taxes on time. For those who pay their taxes on time, free movie tickets plus cash back would be provided.

More than 8 lakh assesses out of a total of 13 lak assesses have received notices about the payment of property taxes in Chennai. By the end of July, all assesses would receive notices from the Chennai Corporation. From localities such as Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam, Thiru VI Ka Nagar and Ambattur etc in Chennai, the largest number of objections have been received.

In the central region, out of total 1986 objections that were received 221 objections have been disposed of. In north Chennai, out of a total of 688 objections, as many as 10 objections have been disposed of. Of a total number of 878 objections received from south Chennai, 94 objections have been disposed of. From Friday onwards, GCC would launch the distribution of free movie tickets for the property tax assesses who have made their payment online.
