In a bid to enhance safety for students, the Greater Chennai City Traffic Police (GCTP) has initiated the `School Traffic Volunteers` program in five city schools. Commissioner of Police, Sandeep Rai Rathore, inaugurated the scheme at Vidyodaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, T. Nagar.

The program aims to engage parents and teachers as volunteers to regulate traffic around school premises, aligning with the National Road Safety Policy guidelines.

The initiative, launched on February 9, 2024, focuses on educating students, parents, and teachers on road safety aspects. Master trainers from the Police Department will provide practical knowledge on traffic rules, pedestrian safety, and understanding traffic signs. Enrolled school traffic volunteers, comprising parents and teachers, assisted by Road Safety Patrol (RSP) cadets, will regulate traffic during school opening and closing times.
